Cliffs of Moher Visitor Guide – Avoid the Crowds and Enjoy the Best Views
Rising to 214 metres (702 feet) above the Atlantic Ocean, the Cliffs of Moher are one of Ireland's most iconic natural attractions. Located on the spectacular Wild Atlantic Way, they welcome over one million visitors every year and offer breathtaking views across Galway Bay, the Aran Islands, the Twelve Bens of Connemara, Mount Brandon in County Kerry, and Liscannor Bay on a clear day.
How to Experience the Cliffs of Moher Without the Crowds
The Cliffs of Moher are at their busiest during the middle of the day, especially in summer. For a quieter and more enjoyable visit, visit early or late in the day. Arriving before 9:00 am or after 6:00 pm allows you to enjoy the cliffs with far fewer visitors and often better lighting for photography.
Enjoy 3.5 km (2.2 miles) of Spectacular Walking at the Cliffs of Moher
Discover some of the most breathtaking coastal scenery in Ireland on a 3.5 km (2.2 mile) walk at the Cliffs of Moher Experience. This easy out-and-back route follows safe, paved pathways and offers stunning views at every turn.
Start at the Visitor Centre and Walk north past O'Brien's Tower for approximately 1 km (0.6 miles), where you'll enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Aran Islands, and the dramatic cliff coastline. Then return to the Visitor Centre along the same route (1 km) and continue heading south to the Southern Viewing Platform (1.5 km round trip), where the cliffs extend dramatically towards **Hag's Head**, offering some of the most impressive viewpoints along the entire coastline. This route combines the Cliffs of Moher's most iconic viewing areas with well-maintained walking paths, making it suitable for most visitors while showcasing the very best of Ireland's famous Atlantic coast.
Please note: The very popular Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk between Doolin and Liscannor is presently closed for improvement measures.
Experience the Cliffs of Moher on a boat tour from the sea!
You can also enjoy the Cliffs from the sea! Boat tours departing from Doolin provide a completely different perspective, allowing you to appreciate the full scale and dramatic beauty of the Cliffs of Moher from the Atlantic Ocean.
Looking for a Less Crowded Alternative?
Less than an hour south of the Cliffs of Moher, the spectacular Kilkee Cliffs offer a quieter coastal experience. Although they are not quite as high, many visitors consider them every bit as impressive—particularly when Atlantic waves crash against the rugged coastline.
The Kilkee Cliff Walk features a free, paved coastal path with panoramic ocean views, parking, and a nearby café overlooking Kilkee Bay. If you're looking to escape the crowds while enjoying some of County Clare's finest scenery, the Kilkee Cliffs are also well worth a visit.
